Impact is critical when it comes to engineering outreach to schools

Sustained contact with school children is more critical than reaching out to as many schools as possible, Arup’s chair for UK, India, Middle East and Africa Dervilla Mitchell has said.

“We have to gain children’s interest at primary school level so that they study the STEM subjects there is a possibility of them following a career in engineering,” said Mitchell.

However, she added during an interview for NCE’s Innovative Thinker article in the in the August issue that the civil engineering industry also needs to look at how it delivers this outreach too.

“We need to help the population in general understand that a career in engineering is a very worthwhile career,” she said. “It is an evolving area to work in and very rewarding – it will allow them to address the issues of today.

“One of our UK offices was doing outreach was working with up to 50 schools over the course of a year. Then they became involved with some research looking at how to be computer science engineering, which found you should visit each school seven times in a year so they are now working with fewer schools in order to add impact to what they do.”

According to Mitchell, ensuring the outreach the sector delivers is critical to the success of the work and ensuing the industry can meet the future demand for skills.

She also suggested that the industry needs to collaborate more on STEM. “There are hundreds of organisations working on advancing the cause of STEM and promoting engineering but perhaps they need to coalesce to become more impactful,” she said.

Why it is a good idea to postpone the JEE Advanced exam by two years

I am not suggesting that the current batch of students be deprived of admission into IITs. I only want to protect the interests of more than 50 per cent of the students who stand to lose greatly if the JEE Advanced is held any time soon. These are the students who, because of the lack of internet, have not been able to join live classes with their teachers, and coaching classes, and hence have been left out in preparation for JEE. How do I know that so many students have this problem? A University of Hyderabad survey showed that only 37 per cent of their students had uninterrupted internet. For school students, this could be worse, or at best comparable. The following proposal addresses this and other issues.

I propose that the students who are interested in an IIT B.Tech degree join any engineering college, in a branch of their choice. Let JEE Advanced be conducted two years later, based on the first two years of their branch, with computer science engineering video courses as the syllabus, which can be accessed offline. Those who get selected can complete the remaining two years at an IIT and graduate with a B.Tech degree.

How Istio Is Built to Boost Engineering Efficiency

One of the bright points to emerge in Kubernetes management is how the core capabilities of the Istio service mesh can help make engineering teams more efficient in running multicluster applications. In this edition of The New Stack Makers podcast, we spoke with Dan Berg, distinguished engineer, IBM Cloud Kubernetes Services and Istio, and Neeraj Poddar, co-founder and chief architect, Aspen Mesh, F5 Networks. They discussed Istio’s wide reach for Kubernetes management and what we can look out for in the future. Alex Williams, founder and publisher of The New Stack, hosted this episode.

Microservices have certainly introduced complexity into infrastructures, compared to the virtual machines (VM) in the past. Istio has emerged as a way to program network policies through an API, Berg said. “It’s a natural evolution to fit where we are today with cloud native applications based on containers,” Berg said.

Istio is also a particularly well-suited way for writing generic and reusable software to manage intraservice communication. As an open source service mesh platform for simplifying computer engineering vs computer science communication, Istio handles “a lot of complicated pieces around microservices communicating with each other,” Poddar said. Its range of use includes enforcing policies, managing certificates and telemetry, “so that you can understand what’s happening in your cluster,” said Poddar. “Those problems become more and more complicated as you add more microservices.”

Top 5 – Tools for engineering and construction

Jeff Pike is a senior lecturer in civil engineering and construction engineering technology at Louisiana Tech and has professional engineering licenses in Virginia, Texas and Louisiana, and is an active professional engineer in Louisiana. Today he shares with us his Top 5 Tools for Engineering and Construction. He said:

“A couple of years ago my youngest son started a job where accurate and precise measurements are critical.  We discussed perfect 90-degree angles, leveling, and plumb lines.  All of these items compare existing conditions to an absolute truth. There is a way that seems right to a man, but true horizontal and true vertical don’t always line up with what we initially think are true.

“All these items are important to me for engineering and construction, and we even see the Biblical prophet Isaiah pointing out their significance. ‘I will test you with the measuring line of justice and the plumb line of righteousness.’ Tape measures and plumb lines.  computer science vs software engineering.”

Engineering and Manufacturing Partnerships Are Key to Successful Drug/Device Combination Products

For decades, silicone has been used for short- and long-term implantable applications given its high level of biocompatibility. Today, a further characteristic—exceptional permeability—holds the key to the next generation of combination products, as the ability of long-term silicone-based drug-eluting implants to improve patient outcomes is beginning to be realized.

However, these combination products are notoriously challenging to design, manufacture, and shepherd through the regulatory process. In this article, we’ll examine potential pitfalls and outline a strategy to ensure a successful product launch.

Long-term implantable combination products (those spending longer than 29 days in the body), augmented with one or more active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), are currently being used to improve lives. For example, some such products could eliminate the need for daily administration of contraceptives or API to prevent computer engineering careers infections. Because silicone-based intrauterine combination products can hold more than one API, a combination product can simultaneously deliver a precise dose of an antiviral medication and a hormone.

Military engineering troops sent to restore Murmansk railway connection

It was in early June the railway bridge across the Kola River collapsed as the spring flood destroyed one of the pillars in the water.

The railway is of utmost importance for Russia’s commercial cargo flow to the port of Murmansk, but also for the numerous military bases on the coast to the Barents Sea and in the Pechenga valley near the border to Norway.

This week, specialists of the railway and engineering troops from the Western Military District were ordered to assist in the construction of an alternative railway link. A 5,7 km long circumvention of the bridge is being built by connecting the existing track to the new railway line to Lavina.

The new bypass is estimated to open in the last week of June and will serve traffic until the bridge itself is restored, likely not before in October.

More than 100 military personnel from the difference between computer science and computer engineering separate railway bridge are working on-site, the press service of the Western Military District informs.

New Digital Twin Technology to Minimize Process Engineering Waste

Announces the release of Petro-SIM® 7.1 digital twin technology. This release extends Petro-SIM's scope of application, improves usability and expands its digital capabilities as an end-to-end integrated asset model for production management, asset performance management, and supply chain optimization.

The Oil & Gas and Chemical industries spend almost USD 1 billion annually on process simulation and optimization software. However, much of this money is wasted on models which are abandoned, inaccurate, replicated in other parts of the organization, or not transferred from one project phase to the next. These issues are pervasive across engineering, as well as operations phases of projects.

Petro-SIM helps solve this problem through the concept of 'One Model, Many Uses', with application across design, information technology vs computer science, operations, maintenance, and supply chain optimization activities. It enables transfer of information from the engineering design phase of projects into usable data-driven insights for daily operations. This allows project developers and operators across a variety of sectors to enhance the value and extend the life of their simulation models.

Hand Tools Association seek govt support to boost mnfg, exports of engineering goods

MSMEs body Hand Tools Association on Tuesday suggested a host of steps to the government such as tax incentives, modern infrastructure and special focus on small and medium enterprises with a view to boost local manufacturing and exports of engineering goods.
Hand Tools Association President S C Ralhan said aggressive boost from the government and greater focus on reverse engineering based R&D is required for local manufacturing of higher valued engineering goods.

He said China became the factory of the world due to a number of reasons- such as strong support to industry in terms of subsidised land and building, and investments of billions of dollars in software engineering vs computer science, internal infrastructure.

For India to cash in on the current sentiment and attract investments which are shifting out of China is an uphill task, because building of infrastructure can take years, Ralhan said.

"Considering the current global scenario ,due to the Covid 19 pandemic, if India is to match the manufacturing prowess of China, the government has to support local manufacturing of higher valued engineering goods, encourage Indian manufacturers for local production, over and above attracting foreign companies to invest in India through FDI (foreign direct investment ) and FPI (foreign portfolio investment), and provide greater focus on the MSME sector," he said.

New Technique for Engineering Living Materials and Patterns

Engineered living materials (ELMs) is a new class of materials that exploit the properties of living organisms. While various techniques such as 3D printers have been utilized for developing ELMs, these techniques are typically limited for static patterns and suffer for technical complications
Researchers at the Departments of Physics and the School of Life Sciences, University of Warwick used fluidic channels to make patterns using bacterial cells.

The method, named computer engineering career, opens the door for further innovations and creation of arts, from ELMs, fundamental research into cellular interactions, to bio-art and tissue engineering

A new method for engineering living materials called ‘MeniFluidics’, made by researchers at the University of Warwick could see a transformation in tissue engineering and bio-art, as well as new ways to research cellular interactions.A bacterial biofilm patterned using MeniFluidics.

Living cells have many properties that non-living materials simply don’t. The ability of controlling the emergent behaviours of cells and organising them into arbitrary patterns is a key step forward towards utilizing living materials, for uses such as organs on a chip. This is why new technologies are being developed to obtain such an ability.

Catching Defects Before They Multiply

From smartphones to laptops, in today’s digital world, we rely on connectivity. One of the components underlying the smooth operation of these machines are silicon chips — semiconductors, which are an essential part of electronic circuits. They are also expensive.

As technology scaling continues, it enables smaller, faster and energy efficient electronics. Device dimensions are approaching the size of an atom, and with smaller prototypes, maintaining the same amount of production output as before has become challenging. The ultimate effect? Higher costs, which inevitably will get passed on to the consumer.

New strategies of defect identification and mitigation need to be developed to keep manufacturing of semiconductors efficient and keep devices, such as computers and smartphones more affordable. what jobs can you get with a computer science degree, Hughes Professor in the USC Viterbi Department of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering and interim vice dean of research for the school, and his colleagues have designed a deep learning algorithm that can identify defects in semiconductors, classify these defects and also map them as they occur.

Former NASA engineer’s obstacle course to keep squirrels at bay wins praise online

When former NASA engineer Mark Rober installed a birdfeeder in his backyard to do some bird watching to fight boredom amid the Covid-19 lockdown, little did he know that he would have to deal with pesky squirrels stealing seeds from it.

In order to keep the squirrels at bay, the American YouTuber bought several “squirrels proof” birdfeeders. However, when his “guests” outsmarted all his quick fixes, he decided to build an elaborate obstacle course to discourage them. Taking to YouTube, Rober shared a video of a building the perfect “squirrel-proof” bird feeder through “how much do computer engineers make”.
