Global cyber security market still set for growth despite

The global cyber security market is predicted to grow in the face of the coronavirus pandemic, latest forecasts show.In the best case scenario, the market is expected to grow 5.6 per cent by the end of 2020, to US$43.1 billion.

This is according to research firm Canalys, which also claimed that in the worst case scenario, the market is still forecasting growth at 2.5 per cent. This is dependent on the level of negative economic impact and duration of the COVID-19 pandemic, the research stated.

The need for this increase in cyber security, according to Canalys research analyst Ketaki Borade, is to combat the increase in security issues following the start of the coronavirus pandemic.“The emergence of entry level computer science jobs in January saw a surge in targeted phishing campaigns and malicious domains established to lure end users searching for information,” Borade said.

“These fell once lockdown took effect. But hackers continue to target organsations and individuals by compromising unsecured and poorly trained remote workers via numerous vectors, including email, social engineering and RDP brute force attacks.

"Organisations will have to reassess changes to workflows, application use, customer engagement and training for cybersecurity awareness in a more virtual workplace.”

Of all the market segments that make up cyber security, web and email security is forecast to see the largest growth of 10.3 per cent to 7.8 per cent, from best case to worst case scenario.

Delivery of preventive care and chronic disease management are key components

Delivery of preventive care and chronic disease management are key components of a high functioning primary care practice. Health Centers (HCs) funded by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) have been delivering affordable and accessible primary health care to patients in underserved communities for over fifty years. This study examines the association between health center organization’s health information technology (IT) optimization and clinical quality performance.

METHODS AND FINDINGS: Using 2016 Uniform Data System (UDS) data, we performed bivariate and multivariate analyses to study the association of Meaningful Use (MU) attestation as a proxy for health IT optimization, patient centered medical home (PCMH) recognition status, and practice size on performance of twelve electronically specified clinical quality measures (eCQMs). Bivariate analysis demonstrated performance of eleven out of the twelve preventive and chronic care jobs with computer science degree was higher among HCs attesting to MU Stage 2 or above. Multivariate analysis demonstrated that Stage 2 MU or above, PCMH status, and larger practice size were positively associated with performance on cancer screening, smoking cessation counseling and pediatric weight assessment and counseling eCQMs.

Impact is critical when it comes to engineering outreach to schools

Sustained contact with school children is more critical than reaching out to as many schools as possible, Arup’s chair for UK, India, Middle East and Africa Dervilla Mitchell has said.

“We have to gain children’s interest at primary school level so that they study the STEM subjects there is a possibility of them following a career in engineering,” said Mitchell.

However, she added during an interview for NCE’s Innovative Thinker article in the in the August issue that the civil engineering industry also needs to look at how it delivers this outreach too.

“We need to help the population in general understand that a career in engineering is a very worthwhile career,” she said. “It is an evolving area to work in and very rewarding – it will allow them to address the issues of today.

“One of our UK offices was doing outreach was working with up to 50 schools over the course of a year. Then they became involved with some research looking at how to be computer science engineering, which found you should visit each school seven times in a year so they are now working with fewer schools in order to add impact to what they do.”

According to Mitchell, ensuring the outreach the sector delivers is critical to the success of the work and ensuing the industry can meet the future demand for skills.

She also suggested that the industry needs to collaborate more on STEM. “There are hundreds of organisations working on advancing the cause of STEM and promoting engineering but perhaps they need to coalesce to become more impactful,” she said.

UTC mechanical engineering students put senior projects on hold to help healthcare workers

Some mechanical engineering students at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (UTC) are helping healthcare workers during the coronavirus pandemic.

At first, some students were tasked with making things like a rocket or an off-road car, but when COVID-19 hit, they decided to switch gears, putting their senior projects on hold in order to design difference between computer science and computer engineering. They were in need of ventilators, respirators and proper face masks.

“My mask idea was something that could be commonly used or something that was around the household that could be turned into some sort of mask,” said Jody Brown, a recently graduated engineering student.

So UTC engineering students like Brown switched up their final class project and got to work on personal protective equipment.

His idea took advantage of a HEPA or Merv air filter you might already have in your home.

How are Indian Organisations Coping up With Cybersecurity Threats

Most organisations, and certainly the more mature ones, had a Business Continuity Plan (BCP) or an IT DR strategy in place. However, most, if not all, did not consider a crisis like this pandemic. This pandemic has forced us all to turn en masse to virtual alternatives. This meant that many had to open their organizational networks and resources to unsecured and unrecognized endpoint devices thereby expanding the threat landscape.

In addition, the uncertainty around COVID-19 has also caused stress among people affecting their morale. The anxiety and fear in people makes them vulnerable to cyber attacks more than ever. Hackers have begun to take the advantage of the anxiety by unleashing computer science engineering phishing attacks.

In India, we’ve had the Maze Ransomware attack on one of the largest IT services firms recently as well as the hack of the video and collaboration tool that many firms jumped to leverage in the absence of a thoroughly tested alternative. This tool exposed data of several organisations to hackers.

The pandemic also presents an interesting dichotomy between the rise of cyber-attacks and business priorities. Most organizations had very little time to prepare and hence focused on ensuring continuity of business, supply chain constraints, et cetera which meant that security took a back seat. This translated into an opportune time for the hacker community to increase their activity.

Networking tips for those who really don't like networking

I know networking is important but I’ve never really liked it, and now during the pandemic it seems even harder. What should I do?

Johan, 42, operations director

A: Redefine “networking” to “connecting,” enhancing existing relationships and forming new ones.

This isn’t merely semantics. Words express our feelings and for many people, the very term “networking” carries baggage.

See for yourself: What emotions arise when you think about making networking outreaches on the phone, via e-mail, or at professional events? Based on your question, I’m thinking anxiety, boredom, or dread come to mind. You may fear rejection or feel like you’re imposing. That’s because networking has acquired a transactional vibe that it doesn’t necessarily deserve. The essence of networking is to meet others and share your stories.

Particularly when you are not in job transition or have a specific need, networking is about connecting to others, sharing information between you, and setting both of you up for more success. It’s not “what can you do for me now.”

Perhaps you don’t manage networking conversations well, or your meetings just don’t seem productive. As with any meeting, a better outcome is achieved when you go in prepared. This is where the 20-Minute Networking Meeting books, written by Marcia Ballinger with Nathan Perez, can help you.

The first lesson is right there in the title. Networking meetings can — and should — be brief. Twenty minutes is a respectful and energizing amount of time. Go in organized, using Ballinger’s framework to get you started. There is one aspect that I found particularly valuable for preparing for almost any situation: the five questions. With this approach, you will spend time preparing three questions tailored to the person you are speaking with. Follow this with “can you recommend someone else should I speak with?” and “how can I help you?”

You can prepare this way for any situation. Imagine attending a conference difference between computer science and computer engineering. Know your three questions in case you meet someone from a company you are interested in or who is in a role you’re intrigued by. You will be prepared and will also make a good impression.

This works well for networking with folks within your company, too. If you are having a virtual coffee get-together, it will give you conversation fodder that encourages professional connections to form. It’s good for you and for your company. Now let’s go back to concerns about reaching out. In the best of times, people like to help others, and it’s flattering to be approached. Sure, some people may not be responsive, but they’re a minority.

In my experience, this is even more true now. People feel isolated, working from home in many cases and socially distanced from people around them. There’s a human aspect of connecting now that is even more needed.

You will notice this when you connect with people from your past. You will find that an invitation like, “I’m taking time to reach out to old friends and colleagues” and asking for 20 minutes will be appreciated. Finally, pay it forward. Say yes when you are approached and help when you can, completing the networking circle.

New silicon chip ‘fingerprint’ for stronger hardware security at low cost

A team of researchers from NUS Electrical and Computer Engineering has developed a novel technique that allows Physically Unclonable Functions (PUFs) to produce more secure, unique ‘fingerprint’ outputs at a very low cost. This achievement elevates the level of hardware security even in low-end systems on chips.
Traditionally, PUFs are embedded in several commercial chips to uniquely distinguish one silicon chip from another by generating a secret key, similar to an individual fingerprint. Such a technology prevents hardware piracy, chip counterfeiting and physical attacks.
The research team from NUS has taken silicon chip fingerprinting to the next level with two significant improvements: firstly, making what is the difference between computer science and computer engineering; and secondly, enabling them to self-conceal.

Investigating Cyber Landscape of Connected and Autonomous Cars

As of late, different assaults have been performed to feature security worries about developing brilliant vehicles. Specifically, remote hacks took a ton of consideration in 2015 when two security specialists commandeered the vehicle's infotainment framework and exhibited how to control keen vehicle capacities. Such assaults raise the dangers related to the keen vehicle frameworks and show that there must be constant allots taken before rolling these vehicles out and about. That is on the grounds that doing so directly affects human lives.

In November 2019, the European Union Agency for Cybersecurity (ENISA) distributed a report that gives a benchmark to far-reaching cybersecurity and security provokes identified with keen autos, laying out the great cybersecurity rehearses by deciding the difficulties, dangers, dangers and assault situations. The target of this far-reaching study was to recognize the principle resources and dangers exposed to the environment of associated and independent autos with significant practices to address cybersecurity issues. The report gave European just as worldwide administrative, institutionalization and approach activities to encourage harmonization.

The what is intrusion detection categorization that covers the brilliant vehicle capacities to recognize the related dangers and dangers. The elements of the savvy autos directly affect the security of travelers. Hence, the security of brilliant vehicles is of prime significance.

Be that as it may, the scope of these innovations, segments, and capacities covers sensors just as computational, correspondence, utilitarian car parts of the vehicle. This accumulation is especially advanced with regard to interoperability.
