Plan to skill govt employees in cyber security, forensics over next 2-3 years

 The Broadcast Engineering Consultants India Limited (BECIL), a public sector undertaking (PSU) under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, has been tasked with the selection of agencies which could provide the training over the next 2-3 years.

In a bid to improve its response to cyber attacks, the government plans to impart training and skill development in cyber security and forensics to its employees at the central and state level over the next three years.

The Broadcast Engineering Consultants India Limited (BECIL), a public sector undertaking (PSU) under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, has been tasked with the selection of agencies which could provide the training over the next 2-3 years.

“The idea is to train government officials with basic knowledge of computer science degree jobs and forensics to improve the overall awareness levels so that in the event of a breach, there can be some initial response while waiting for a more sophisticated response,” an official at BECIL said.

JNU will now allow international students to enrol at its School of Engineering

International students will now be able to enrol at the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU)’s School of Engineering.

In a meeting held on 22 June, JNU’s apex Academic Council approved a proposal for 15 per cent supernumerary seats for foreign students at the School of Engineering. The thought behind the move is that it will help the school internationalise its student input, bringing in diversity.

The minimum eligibility criteria and other ancillary requirements for this programme are defined through the Ministry of Human Resource Development’s Direct Admission for Students from Abroad or information technology vs computer science. Screening and admission under DASA is primarily based on SAT subject scores (Mathematics Level-II, Physics and Chemistry).

However, because of the Covid-19 pandemic, the admission process is delayed for this year, and is expected to start in September.

Impact is critical when it comes to engineering outreach to schools

Sustained contact with school children is more critical than reaching out to as many schools as possible, Arup’s chair for UK, India, Middle East and Africa Dervilla Mitchell has said.

“We have to gain children’s interest at primary school level so that they study the STEM subjects there is a possibility of them following a career in engineering,” said Mitchell.

However, she added during an interview for NCE’s Innovative Thinker article in the in the August issue that the civil engineering industry also needs to look at how it delivers this outreach too.

“We need to help the population in general understand that a career in engineering is a very worthwhile career,” she said. “It is an evolving area to work in and very rewarding – it will allow them to address the issues of today.

“One of our UK offices was doing outreach was working with up to 50 schools over the course of a year. Then they became involved with some research looking at how to be computer science engineering, which found you should visit each school seven times in a year so they are now working with fewer schools in order to add impact to what they do.”

According to Mitchell, ensuring the outreach the sector delivers is critical to the success of the work and ensuing the industry can meet the future demand for skills.

MSMEs body Hand Tools Association on Tuesday suggested a host of steps to the government such as tax incentives, modern infrastructure and special focus on small and medium enterprises with a view to boost local manufacturing and exports of engineering goods.
Hand Tools Association President S C Ralhan said aggressive boost from the government and greater focus on reverse engineering based R&D is required for local manufacturing of higher valued engineering goods.

He said China became the factory of the world due to a number of reasons- such as strong support to industry in terms of subsidised land and building, and investments of billions of dollars in software engineering vs computer science, internal infrastructure.

For India to cash in on the current sentiment and attract investments which are shifting out of China is an uphill task, because building of infrastructure can take years, Ralhan said.

Wheeling University Engineering Science Students Michael Dague, Joshua Blandino Nab Scholarships

Two incoming freshmen at Wheeling University will receive scholarships awarded by TECNOCAP, the world’s third-largest manufacturer of metal caps and enclosures.

Once again this year, TECNOCAP has partnered with Wheeling University to provide academic scholarships to incoming engineering science majors. Scholarship winners for this year are Michael Dague, a resident of Wheeling, and Joshua Blandino of Milford, Del. The two incoming freshmen will each receive a $23,000 scholarship over the course of their four years at Wheeling University.

MTU's Adrienne Minerick Elected to Lead Engineering Educators

Adrienne Minerick, dean of the College of Computing at Michigan Technological University, is president-elect of the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE).

Engineering colleges in dire straits

Managements of many of nearly 100 engineering colleges in Tiruchi region of Anna University are facing financial crisis and feel stranded in the backdrop of an uncertain admission season caused by the pandemic.

lockdown hits new civil engineering projects

Project starts in civil engineering fell by 34% in April, compared to the same period last year, according to new figures released by construction industry analyst Glenigan. Civil engineering fared better than the residential market where Glenigan recorded a 40% drop last month compared to 2019, while the non-residential sector also saw a 34% fall in new starts.

“The number and value of new projects starting on site has fallen sharply since the lockdown came into force at the end of March and continued throughout April,” said Glenigan economic analyst Rhys Gadsby.

“Civil engineering starts were down 10% on the preceding three months on a seasonally adjusted basis and were 34% lower than a year ago. This fall was led by a sharp drop in infrastructure starts, which were 52% down on a year ago and 34% lower than the preceding three months on a seasonally adjusted basis. In contrast the value of utilities starts was 47% up on the preceding three months on a seasonally adjusted basis and 13% higher than a year ago.

“Residential starts declined the most during the three months to April against the previous year, with private residential starts taking the biggest hit. Private housing project starts fell 43% against the previous year, and by 29% compared with the preceding three months on a seasonally adjusted basis. Social housing starts dropped 32% against the previous year, however strongly improved on the previous three months on a seasonally adjusted basis, with a rise of 30%.”

“Non-residential projects fell against the preceding three months on a seasonally adjusted basis and against a year ago, falling by 21% and 34% respectively. Industrial project starts contributed to this decline dropping by 42% on a year ago and by 31% on against the preceding three months on a seasonally adjusted basis. Retail starts also saw a dramatic decline, with starts down 42% on the previous year, and by 7% on the preceding three months computer engineering careers.
